A Peculiar People

God has a group of people that are special to Him and they are known as “peculiar”. In the Hebrew the word means to shut up in the sense of being very precious and special. In the Greek the word means beyond usual and special (one’s own). This is another example of how God watches over His own. We are going to start out in Titus learning about things we should acquire.

Titus 2:8-15

2:8 sound G 5199; healthy and true (doctrine). If you stick to doing what is right and the word of God, there can be no bad thing said of you without it being a lie.

2:9 this hits on people who speak ill will against their boss at the workplace; causing problems.

2:10 purloining G 3557; embezzle, keep back or steal. As Christians we are not supposed to partake in this type of behavior.  Put on the word of God and wear it with confidence; showing what is right and wrong.

2:11-12 God rewards those that do things His way. We can receive those rewards even now in this present world. When we do things as He instructs us, we become peculiar to God and He keeps us as a treasure for Himself!

2:13-14 He wants those special people to be zealous to do His will. Do we fit this mold? Can God call us peculiar?

2:15 Hang on to what is right. Don’t let others lead you off of the right path that leads to God.

Exodus 19:3-6

19:3-4 God took them under His wing of protection as a mother eagle would defend its babies. They made it out of Egypt safe and witnessed many mighty miracles!

19:5 there are things God wants from us in order to be peculiar. They are very easy things to keep: obey His voice and keep His covenants. He owns everything and wants to share it with you.

19:6 we are a nation under God no matter how many people disagree! We have a responsibility to carry that great tradition on for the sake of others.

Deuteronomy 26:15-19

26:15 you could say that we live in a land of milk and honey. Those nations with God will prosper.

26:16 pleasing our Father should be our top priority. He is the source of all good things.

26:17 avouched H 559; vowed. This is how we please God; being a doer of the word.

26:18 we are special to God because we want to do His will. There is a condition here; we must keep His commands! We all fall short, and when that happens repent and move on.

26:19 it is a good thing (and a pleasure) to be on the side of the one who created all!

Ezekiel 37:14-22 (this begins with the dry bones. This was the whole house of Israel spiritually dead)

37:14 His peculiar people have a job in bringing those dead bones back to life. We are to speak the word and watch as life enters in.

37:15-16 as it stands now the house of Judah and the house of Joseph (10 tribes) are split. They will soon be joined together as one peculiar people.

37:17-18 this is a future event.

37:19-20 this is talking about the joining back together of the tribes of Israel into one kingdom. The sticks will be joined when Christ returns because a kingdom will need a King to rule it.

37:21-22 the tribes are divided now but soon will be brought back together as one peculiar people.

1 Peter 2:1-9

2:1 these are the things that God’s peculiar people work to succeed at.

2:2 sincere G 97; undeceitful, unadulterated, sincere. Seek after the true word of God and don’t get sidetracked by fakes.

2:3 how could you ever want anything else once you have experienced the fullness of God.

2:4 they rejected and crucified Jesus. We should strive to be chosen of God and not men as well.

2:5 this is the second time that peculiar people is connected with the priesthood. You may not see yourself as a priest but your ministry could be as simple as bringing joy and blessings to others.

2:6 Christ is the chief cornerstone and the Living word. Those that learn the word will never be found confused.

2:7-8 Christ will be a stone of stumbling to those that don’t really know the word. They will fall short and not stick to the correct path that God has set for each of His children because they don’t know the way.

2:9 God treasures each and every one of you. We must show forth the mighty things God is doing in our lives, so other can see and glorify Him in heaven.
